MTL IOP Range Surge Protection Overview
Eaton's MTL IOP range offers cost-effective surge protection for I/O circuits. This series protects both digital and analogue input/output loops. The MTL IOP range combines high packing density with a low price point. Each unit uses a hybrid circuit with 20kA gas discharge tubes. Solid state components work alongside these tubes for complete protection. Exceptionally low line resistance adds only a tiny voltage drop. Removable terminals make installation and maintenance very simple. Wire entry comes angled to assist wiring in tight enclosures.
Available Models in the MTL IOP Range
IOP32D provides surge protection for two loops (four wires). This model fits applications needing dual channel protection.
IOP-AC protects two 120V or 240V AC loops. It works perfectly for AC circuit applications.
IOP32 delivers surge protection for one single loop (two wires). Customers wanting single channel integrity choose this model.
IOP HC32 handles high current loops up to 5A. Use it to protect solenoids, relays, and actuators.

IOP HC32 Detailed Specifications
This high current model has a nominal voltage of 32V. Rated voltage (MCOV) reaches 36V. Nominal current stands at 5A. Nominal discharge current (8/20µs) is 3kA. Maximum discharge current (8/20µs) reaches 20kA. Lightning impulse current (10/350µs) hits 2.5kA. Residual voltage at Isn shows 65V L-L and 65V L-G (250V sparkover). Voltage protection level at 1kV/µs stays below 38V. Bandwidth is not applicable for this model. Series resistance measures 0 ohms. Test categories include A2, B2, C1, C2, C3, and D1. Overstressed fault mode at 3kA reaches 22kA. Impulse durability (8/20µs) is 10kA. Degree of protection is IP20. AC durability reaches 1Arms at 5T. Service conditions require 80kPa to 160kPa with 5% to 95% RH.
Key Features of the MTL IOP Range
Fully automatic operation makes these devices react immediately. Equipment never sees damaging surges between lines or to ground. The MTL IOP range redirects surges safely to ground. After each surge, the unit resets automatically. Space saving design puts two loops in a 12mm wide package. Effective space per loop is only 6mm for the IOP32D and IOP-AC. One simple manual operation clamps modules securely onto DIN rail. This action automatically provides the high-integrity ground connection. ATEX and FM certification applies to IOP32 and IOP32D.
Installation Guidelines for MTL IOP Range
First, disconnect all power before installing any MTL IOP range device. Mount the unit on standard T-section DIN rail (35 x 15mm). For adverse environments, use the specially-plated DIN rail version. Remove the plug-in terminals from the side of the module. Strip your wires to the correct length for 2.5mm² terminals. Insert each wire into its designated terminal position. Tighten the screw terminal securely to hold each wire. Plug the terminal block back into the MTL IOP module. Verify the ground connection through the DIN rail is solid. Finally, restore power and test the protected circuit.
Application Scenarios for MTL IOP Range
Digital I/O cards in PLC systems benefit from the MTL IOP range. Analogue input loops for pressure and temperature transmitters also need protection. Solenoid valves and relays use the IOP HC32 for 5A protection. Actuator circuits in process control plants work well with this series. AC loops at 120V or 240V connect to the IOP-AC model. Remote I/O racks in industrial environments frequently install these devices. Oil and gas facilities choose the MTL IOP range for its ATEX certification.

Common FAQs about the MTL IOP Range
Q1: What is the response time for the MTL IOP range?
The MTL IOP range reacts in less than 1 nanosecond. This instantaneous response prevents equipment from seeing damaging surges.
Q2: Can I use the IOP HC32 for 24V DC solenoid circuits?
Yes, the IOP HC32 handles up to 32V nominal and 5A current. Most 24V DC solenoids fall well within these ratings.
Q3: How do I disconnect a loop for maintenance on the IOP32D?
Simply unplug the removable terminals from the side of the module. This action breaks the loop without removing any wires.
Q4: What is the difference between IOP32 and IOP32D?
The IOP32 protects one single loop (two wires). The IOP32D protects two loops (four wires) in the same 12mm width.
Q5: Does the MTL IOP range work with 4-20mA analogue signals?
Yes, the MTL IOP range works perfectly for 4-20mA loops. Low series resistance (4 ohms or 1 ohm) adds minimal voltage drop. Bandwidth of 6.5 MHz does not affect analogue signal accuracy.
