The Allen-Bradley 25A-A011N114 is a AC adjustable-frequency drive — PowerFlex 523 for industrial control and automation applications.

The Allen-Bradley 25A-A011N114 is a PowerFlex 523 adjustable-frequency AC drive rated 2.2 kW (3 HP) at 200…240V AC single-phase input, delivering 11 A continuous output in a Frame B IP20 NEMA/Open Type enclosure. It combines a standard interface module with integral keypad and LED display, an integral EMC filter, and an integral brake IGBT in one panel-mount package.

What makes this PowerFlex 523 drive suited to oil and gas panels?

Field-proven PowerFlex 520-series drives are built for demanding environments where panel space and uptime matter. This model ships with a standard interface module, so operators can configure and monitor it locally without extra hardware. The integral EMC filter reduces the need for external filtering in many installations, while the IP20 open enclosure suits mounting inside a protected control cabinet. For rugged sites, the drive tolerates -20…+50 °C ambient without derating in vertical IP20 mounting, and up to +60 °C with derating.

Key electrical and control specifications

  • Supply voltage: 200…240V AC, 1-phase, with -15 % / +10 % input tolerance.
  • Input frequency: 47…63 Hz.
  • Rated output: 2.2 kW (3 HP) normal duty and heavy duty at 11 A.
  • Output frequency: 0…500 Hz programmable.
  • Control methods: Volts/Hertz, sensorless vector control and Economizer SVC.
  • Carrier frequency: 2…16 kHz, with published rating based on 4 kHz.
  • Efficiency: 97.5 % typical.
  • Power dissipation: 116 W total at rated load and speed.
  • Displacement power factor: 0.98 across the speed range.
  • Enclosure: IP20 NEMA/Open Type, Frame B, 180.0 H × 87.0 W × 172.0 D mm, 1.6 kg.

The drive includes one isolated analog input (0…10V DC or 4…20 mA), one non-isolated analog output, five digital inputs (one dedicated Stop plus four programmable), one pulse train input, and one programmable Form C relay output. Four independently programmable accel and decel times are adjustable from 0 to 600 s in 0.01 s increments.

How does the drive integrate with plant networks?

The built-in RS-485 DSI port on RJ45 terminal C1 supports Modbus RTU communication using function codes 03, 06 and 16. Network parameters include data rates from 1200 to 38400 bit/s, node addresses 1…247, and RTU formats such as 8-N-1. For EtherNet/IP, DeviceNet, PROFIBUS DP-V1 or PROFINET, the 520-series communication adapters (25-COMM-E2P, 25-COMM-D, 25-COMM-P, 25-COMM-PNET2P) are available as option cards; the PowerFlex 523 supports one communication card.

When wiring the RS-485 network, use terminating resistors at each end of the cable and keep network wiring at least 0.3 m from power wires, crossing only at right angles. Only pins 4 and 5 of the RJ45 DSI connector carry the network signal; the remaining pins must not be connected. Communication-loss handling is configurable via C125 [Comm Loss Action] and C126 [Comm Loss Time].

Environmental limits and protection for harsh locations

Operating temperature ranges from -20 °C minimum to +50 °C without derating in vertical IP20 mounting; derating extends operation to +60 °C, and the optional 25-FANx-70C control module fan kit raises the maximum to 70 °C. Storage temperature is -40…+85 °C. The drive withstands 15 g operating shock and 2 g operating vibration per IEC 60068-2-27 and IEC 60068-2-6:1995. Relative humidity is 0…95 % non-condensing, and altitude is 1000 m without derating, up to 4000 m with derating.

Protection features include electronic motor overload protection (class 10, NEC article 430), overcurrent limits of 200 % hardware and 300 % instantaneous fault, DC bus overvoltage trip at 405 V DC, undervoltage trip at 190 V DC, and 100 ms power ride-through. The drive is c-UL-us Listed to UL 508C and CSA C22.2 No. 274, and carries CE and UKCA declarations. Note that the drive produces leakage current exceeding 3.5 mA AC, so the earthing conductor must comply with local high-protective-earthing-current regulations.

What should engineers consider during installation?

Mount the drive vertically inside a pollution degree 1 or 2 environment, which is required for CE and UK compliance. Maintain clearance for fan cooling, and separate control wiring from power cables as described in the RS-485 wiring guidance. The drive is not intended for public low-voltage networks supplying domestic premises; additional line filtering and enclosure measures may be needed. For applications requiring an IP30/NEMA 1/UL Type 1 enclosure, the 25-JBAx option kit is required. Always follow the manufacturer's safety manual and local electrical codes.
